The Beggar: Lion or Fox

Sunday 27 July 2014

A beggar was collecting wooden logs from a forest for cooking his food. Suddenly, he saw something amazing. A fox was lying at some distance who had lost all his limbs. The beggar thought, 'This is so strange. How has he managed to survive in such a condition!! Besides, he seems to be completely healthy.' He was lost in his thoughts when a lion started coming near to fox. Coming back to his senses, the beggar quickly climbed on a high branch of a tree. The lion had hunted down a deer and was carrying it in his jaws. He went closer to the fox. Instead of attacking, the lion offered a piece of deer's meat to the fox.

The beggar was extremely amazed looking at all this. He could not believe at all this and thought, 'How can this lion be so kind to fox. Instead of attacking this fox, the lion shared his food.' As this was something unbelievable to him, so he came back the next day to confirm. The lion came and provided food to the fox in the similar manner.

The beggar murmured, "This is the proof of God's kindness. The God takes care of everyone. From today onwards, I would leave myself to God and God will take care of me too just like this fox." The beggar left everything he had in the forest itself and sat under a tree. A day passed but nobody came there. Second day, a few people passed from that place but nobody noticed the beggar. He was getting weaker with every passing day. Few more days passed and now the beggar could not even move due to his weakness.

A saint was passing from there who noticed the beggar lying almost unconscious. The saint went near him and gave him water and fruits. After gaining some energy, the beggar told everything to the saint and asked, "Isn't it too harsh for the God to be so unkind to me, while being so kind to that fox?" The saint replied, "Yes, this is harsh, but how can you be so stupid. Why you thought of becoming the fox instead of the lion. Maybe the God wanted you to realize that you should try to become the lion, but you just understood completely opposite seeing the event of the lion and the fox."
