The Most Important Finger

All five fingers of a hand started debating. Each of them thought that only it was the most important finger of hand. They were trying to prove their worth and show their importance. The thumb said, "I am most important. Without me none other fingers can do anything worthy." The finger next to it disagreed and said that it was most important; and the debate continued with every finger disagreeing to other fingers' comments and giving own justifications.

When the debate became too fierce and no result was at sight, all fingers decided to reach the court of law for the judgement. The judge listened to the case patiently and then asked all the fingers, "Each one of you prove your importance and how you claim to be the most important finger." The thumb said, "I am the most important of all fingers. People take my impression on papers and it is considered to be as important as signature of the person." The index finger said, "I am most important. I am used to point at things and help many people to understand things at childhood by pointing things." This way all fingers gave some justification for themselves.

The judge ordered to bring a rasgulla (a spherical sweet of Indian origin consisting of a ball of curd cheese cooked in sugar syrup). Then he asked the thumb to pick it. The thumb made all efforts but could not pick the rasgulla. Similarly, the judge asked all other fingers individually to pick the rasgulla but none of them were able to pick it. In the end, the judge ordered all the fingers to pick the rasgulla together. All of them instantly picked it. The judge gave the decision, "It is now clear that your strength lies in your togetherness and unity. Individually, you may not be able to do important things, but together you can do wonders. None of you is most important but all of you together make the most important unit."
