Importance of Name

Sunday 21 December 2014

Long time ago, there lived a boy. His parents had named him as 'Sinner'. When the boy grew up, he came to know the meaning of his name. He felt quite embarrassed with his own name and even started disliking himself because of it.

One day he requested his teacher to suggest him a good name. His teacher explained, "Name is only given to address a person. There is nothing like good or bad name. It does not matter if you have Sinner as your name. Only what matters is what you do in your life. A person named 'Saint' can be a criminal and a person named 'Amoral' can be a great saint." But the boy still kept on requesting earnestly for changing his name.

Seeing such a strong desire, his teacher said, "Although your actions will define you, but if you so desire, you can go to town and come back with the best name you get for yourself." The boy went out in search of good names.

He just started looking around when he saw a dead body carried by people for last rituals. He asked people, "What was the name of this person who died?" A person replied, "His name was 'Immortal'." The boy started thinking, 'He died even though his name was Immortal. What was the use of this name if he died!!' He went a little further when he saw a beggar. He went near that beggar and asked his name. The beggar replied, "My name is 'Rich'." The boy was puzzled, 'His name is Rich and he is still begging for his bread.' He returned back to his home. His desire for changing his name had gone. He accepted his name and thought, 'My teacher was right. It does not matter if my name is Sinner. I just need to focus on doing good deeds.'
