Which Lion You Feed

Sunday 17 July 2016

Once upon a time, in a tribal region of African continent, a tribal group was moving from one village to another. Inside that tribe, there were several children who used to play among each other. One day, while they were playing, tribal leader scolded them for making noises. A child from the group went near his father and asked, "Respected Father, I have a question. Today our tribal leader scolded us while we were playing, although we were not making much noises. On other days, he also used to happily play with us and we make much more noise together. Why does he behave so differently? Why is he good sometimes and so bad at other times?"

His father explained, "Son, the lion you feed, that lion will control you." His son did not understand and further questioned, "But Father, we don't have any lions in our group. And how does it relate to my question?" His father explained, "Son, the lions I am speaking of, live inside us. There are two lions living inside us. One is good lion and other is bad lion. Both of them are in constant fight among each other. But only one lion can control us at a given point of time."

His son, still not convinced, asked, "Father, why good lion does not control us all the time?" The father answered, "Good question, son. It is because we are responsible of feeding the lion we wish. When we feed bad lion, he gets stronger and gets hold on the good lion. The bad lion feeds on all the bad things that destroys humanity. It includes jealousy, anger, intolerance and all such things which put people in darkness of ignorance."

"The good lion, on the other hand, feeds on things like kindness, love, acceptance which put people in the light of clarity and knowledge. When we feed this good lion, he becomes stronger and defeats the bad lion. This is the reason why a person becomes good and bad at different times. The more you will feed good lion, the more happy and peaceful your life will be."

His son asked, "Father, why don't we kill this bad lion altogether?" The father further explained, "Son, you don't need to try to kill the bad lion. You just need to focus on feeding good lion. This good lion would defeat the bad lion himself. So, my dear son, tell me, in your life from now onward, which lion you will feed?"
