Shoes of Labourer

Tuesday 23 January 2018

Once a teacher was travelling with his student. On his way back, they saw a pair of shoes lying outside a building under construction. They were quite old and torn and probably was of some poor labourer working in the building. The student thought something and said to his teacher, "Why don't we hide these shoes and see the labourer worried. It would be a great fun."

The teacher replied demurely, "It is not good idea to make fun of a poor labourer. But if you so insist, put some coins in each of his shoes and let us see the reaction of that labourer." The student did the same and both of them hid themselves in nearby bushes.

Soon, the labourer came from the building and put his foot inside shoes. As soon as he put his foot, he felt something pricking him in the shoe. He took out his foot and found a few coins in the shoe. He took out the coins and looked around. However, he could not see anyone. He took the other shoe and found few more coins lying in it too. When he could not see anyone around, he put the coins in his pocket and said, "O Almighty, I thank you for sending such a kind stranger. Due to his help, I am now able to buy medicines for my sick wife and food for my hungry son." Listening to this, tears fell out of the student's eyes due to overwhelming emotions.

The teacher asked to the student, "Did all this give you any lesser happiness than making fun of him?" The student answered, "Thank you for teaching me such an important lesson. I have now learned that helping others is far more enjoyable. It is the lesson I will never forget in my life."
