Free will: True or False

Friday 10 May 2013

Once there lived a saint in a village. Many people used to come to hear his speeches. He even used to organize question-answer sessions after his speech, where he answered the questions of listeners. One day, after his speech was over, one listener asked him the question, "Does free will exist? Or we all just do what is predetermined for us?"

The saint looked at the questioner, smiled and called him to come near. Then he asked the questioner, "Can you please lift your one leg?" The questioner lifted his one leg and stood on one leg. Now, the saint asked, "Can you please lift your other leg?" The questioner replied, "I can not do it. I would fall even if I try to attempt it."

The saint said with a smile, "This is the answer of your question." The questioner did not understand it. Seeing the confused face of questioner, the saint explained, "Just like you easily lifted one leg, but unable to lift the other leg; the same way free will is provided to humans. Humans are neither completely free, nor completely chained. A human being follows the laws of nature while enjoying his/her free will. For example, you have the voice. You can speak anything. This is your free will of what you speak. You can make someone happy by your words or you can hurt others. But although you are free to chose among these two options, you are bound within these two options only. Also, whatever you would speak, you will have to reap the fruits of your words afterwards. This is the law of nature, and your supposedly free will can not let you escape this law."
