Every morning, Socrates used to stand in front of mirror. He then just used to keep looking at himself and admire himself patiently for long times.
One day, one of his students saw him doing all this. While Socrates was admiring himself, he started smiling instinctively.
Socrates turned towards his student and said, "Undoubtedly you must be smiling because of the thought that why this old ugly man is admiring himself. What does this man do everyday seeing himself so closely in mirror."
The student felt embarrassed and stood with his heads pointing down. Before he could apologize, Socrates said, "On seeing myself in mirror daily, I become conscious of my physical ugliness. It inspires me to fill my life with so many qualities that my physical ugliness may hold no importance whatsoever."
The student asked, "Does this mean that physically beautiful people should not see their image in the mirror?" Socrates explained, "It is not like that. When such people see themselves in mirror, they should understand that their words, thoughts and actions should compliment their physical beauty. They should be conscious that none of their actions or thoughts should oppose their physical beauty."
