Saint with squirrel and scorpion

Saturday, 2 March 2013

Once there lived a saint in a village. Incidentally his house was near the river. He always used to help everyone. Some people used to consider him a fool as he never bothered helping someone even at his own loss.

One day, while he was meditating on the name of God, a squirrel fell in the river. When the saint came to know about it, he put his hand inside the river and took out the squirrel. The squirrel started jumping happily and touched the feet of saint and went away. Everyone felt happy to see the behavior of squirrel.

After sometime, one scorpion also fell inside the river. When the saint was informed about it, he put his hand inside and took the scorpion out of river. The scorpion stung on the hand of saint soon after coming out of the river. The saint screamed in pain and he lost the control and the scorpion again fell inside the river. Seeing this, the saint again put his hand and took the scorpion out. The scorpion again stung on his hand and this thing kept on repeating for few times. The disciples of saint were confused to see all this. One of the disciple asked the saint, "Why are you trying to save this scorpion when he is biting you again and again? Let the scorpion meet his fate if he is not accepting your help."

The saint replied, "My habit is to save the creatures from any trouble. The scorpion's habit is of biting. When the scorpion is not ready to leave his bad habit of biting even to his savior, how can I change my habit of saving him. I can only hope that I would be able to somehow save the scorpion and he will accept my help. For me, there is no difference between squirrel and scorpion. Both of them are loved by my God, then how can I hate anyone." Hearing this, the respect for the saint grew in the hearts of his disciples and everyone assisted the saint in saving the scorpion. The scorpion was taken out of the river successfully with their combined effort and was left free after taking him to a safer place.
