The Mother Cow

Sunday 13 July 2014

There was a kingdom named Mayapur in India. It was famous that the chief minister named Hoshiyar Singh of that kingdom was very clever. People from far across lands came to seek solution to their problems. Once a farmer named Tukaram came in the court. He had two cows with him. On entering the royal courtyard, he presented his problem to the minister. He said, "Respected royal minister, I have this problem that I have two cows with me. But it is not known that who is the mother and who is the daughter among them."

The minister looked at both the cows. They looked identical. There was no apparent difference in their looks and it was very difficult to tell who is the mother cow and who is the daughter. Hoshiyar Singh felt puzzled for the first time in his life. He asked Tukaram to come next day to know the answer. Tukaram agreed and returned with his cows. Feeling puzzled, Hoshiyar Singh came to home. His wife had never seen him with such a troubled face. Therefore she asked, "What is the reason of your worry?" The minister told his wife about the event and how he was feeling clueless to solve the question asked by Tukaram. His wife smiled and said that she would accompany him the next day and would easily answer to Tukaram.

Next day, Hoshiyar Singh took his wife to the court where Tukaram was already waiting with his cows. Hoshiyar Singh introduced his wife to Tukaram and said, "My wife would tell the difference to you." His wife brought Alfalfa and put it in front of both the cows. One of the cows started eating and finished it much quicker than the other cow. Then she went and started eating the Alfalfa of other cow as well. The other cow did not resist and simply moved away to allow the first cow to eat.

The wife of Hoshiyar Singh said, "This is now quite simple. This cow who allowed the other cow to eat her own food is the mother cow. Only a mother has such noble feelings of love, sacrifice and motherhood. Only a mother can leave her food and comforts for the child. This noble cow is the mother cow and the other one is her daughter."
