The Beggar

Tuesday 25 December 2018

He was unemployed. One rupee looked like millions to him. He was just wishing to get a job. After trying a lot, he received a call letter for job interview. But he had to leave for other city. It would cost him somewhere around five hundred rupees to reach there. However, he had only ten rupees. He washed his only pair of formal shirt and trouser. Next morning, he wore them, ate a biscuit and went for interview.

He took lift from others, walked few miles and reached the inter city bus terminal. However, he did not have five hundred rupees for the fare. He became extremely worried. This might be his last chance to get a job. One ascetic was sitting outside a small temple built near bus terminal. The ascetic saw that man and called him. He went near ascetic and saw that he had a bowl with him. In the bowl, he had got many coins, probably people gave him as charity. The ascetic asked for the reason of worry. The man explained him everything and told that he needed five hundred rupees urgently. The ascetic listened him patiently and said, "Count how many coins I have in this bowl. You can take money from it." The man hesitated. The ascetic persuaded him further and said, "Don't worry, I only need money for my survival. I donate the rest amount to temple. You take this money and once you get the job, please donate five hundred rupees to someone needy. That will work."

The man counted the coins. It was exactly five hundred. He thanked the ascetic, took the coins and went for his interview. The interview went good. He got selected. As a joining bonus, he received a thousand rupees. Happily, he returned to his hometown. While leaving from bus terminal, he thought of thanking the ascetic and return five hundred rupees. However, he saw that a crowd had gathered near the temple. He reached near and saw that the ascetic was dead. He asked people around him about the ascetic. One person told that he died as he was suffering from high fever and did not have money for buying medicines.

Suddenly, a person from a crowd said, "Such beggars are a load on society. They just live on others' help but can never help anyone. Good that he died." The man could say nothing because he knew who was the real beggar.
