Akbar's three questions

Saturday 16 March 2013

Among the Navratna (nine gems) of Akbar's court ministers, Birbal was known for his intelligence. One day, Akbar thought that he would ask the toughest question to Birbal. He thought whole day and prepared three most difficult questions to ask from Birbal. The next day, as soon as Birbal entered the court, Akbar shot all three questions to him - "Where does God live? How is God realized? What does God do?"

Birbal became shocked to hear the unexpected questions all of a sudden. After few moments, Birbal said, "O Great Emperor! I will give you the answers of these questions by tomorrow." Birbal came home early and was very worried and depressed as he was not able to think of any answer. Seeing him, his son asked, "Respected father, why are you so worried today?" Birbal explained to his son everything and told that he is not able to think of any answer that he could provide by next day to the emperor. After hearing all this, Birbal's son insisted that he wanted to go the court of Akbar for answering all the questions to him. Birbal hesitated, but on continued request of his son, agreed later on. The next day, Birbal and his son entered the court.

Akbar was waiting eagerly for Birbal and as soon as Birbal entered, he again asked, "So Birbal, today you have to give answers to my questions." Birbal said, "My respected emperor! your questions can be answered even by my son. You can ask the questions to him. I am sure he will answer them to your satisfaction." Akbar turned towards Birbal's son and asked the first question, "Where does God live?" Birbal's son asked for a glass of milk mixed with sugar before answering the question. Akbar thought, 'How can this child answer my tough questions. He still takes milk to meet his hunger.' Looking at the glass filled with milk, Birbal's son asked, "O great emperor! Can you please explain how the milk tastes?" Akbar tasted the milk and said, "Its sweet." Birbal's son said, "But I can not see the sugar in the milk." Akbar said, "It is because it is dissolved in the milk." Birbal's son explained, "Just like the sugar is not visible, but has given its sweetness to milk; the same way God is present everywhere, but can not be viewed with these worldly eyes and only the presence of God can be felt by normal human beings."

Satisfied with the reply, Akbar asked the second question, "How is God realized?" Birbal's son asked for a cup of curd before replying. After getting the cup of curd, Birbal's son asked, "O great emperor! Can you see the butter in this curd?" Akbar said, "Although the butter is present, but we have to churn it to get it from curd." Birbal's son said, "The same way, although God is present everywhere, we have to churn our inner self with pure devotion to realize the God."

Akbar got satisfied with the answer and asked third question, "Ok, but what does God do?" Birbal's son said, "You will have to accept me as your master. Only then I can answer your this question." Akbar agreed and said, "I accept you as my master. Please help me by giving the answer." Birbal's son said, "It looks strange that the master is standing on foot, while the disciple is sitting on the royal throne." Akbar immediately stepped down of throne and offered Birbal's son to sit. Birbal's son sat on the royal throne and said, "This is the answer of your question. God gives the throne of peace and happiness to the true humans in a fraction of second, and takes away that throne from the person who indulges in any activity that hurts the humanity."
